Guidano proposed, in the last revision of his model, a new formulation of the construct of “Personal Meaning Organizations” (PMOs) based on two dimensions: inwardness/outwardness and field-dependence/field-independence. The first dimension does not raise any difficulty whereas the second one faces at least two problems: first, it is a variable with a “normal” distribution (or bell curve) so it appears to discriminate poorly between different PMOs, and then the polarity that could be expected according to the theory may not coincide with the polarity that is observed at the clinical level. In this paper we suggest a slightly different concept, which is related to some dynamics between cognitions and emotions. This construct may be a promising substitute for the field-dependence/field-independence dimension within the PMOs theory.[:]
