Objective: Music therapy has a relevant rehabilitation and psychological importance. It contributes to create a structure within the group and to promote the integration of its members. This study is aimed at observing the progresses of the “Albatros” group members going through a music therapy pathway and at evaluating its efficacy. Method: The sample is composed by two rehabilitatation groups (n=8) and two singles cases (n=2), all diagnosed with schizophrenia of different subtypes. The efficacy of music therapy treatment was evaluated through the Music Therapy Observation Scale, which was built on this purpose; clinical area was assessed by BPRS and VFG, administered at the beginning (October 2009) and at the end (July 2010) of the observation period. Results: A decrease of total and single item scores (16; 17; 18; 19; 20) of BPRS has been observed and it was specifically related to the music therapy process. VGF scores indicated a better social functioning in meaningful social relationships. Conclusions: Our results show the efficacy of the music therapy intervention within the integrated approach to schizophrenic patients. Music therapy labs has contributed to the improvement of the adherence to psychosocial rehabilitation programs, to the individual empowerment, to decrease the perception of stigma.[:]
