The aim of this paper is to suggest a detailed analysis and a clarification about the position the concept of Verleugnung has in Freudian thinking. Through a historical survey it will be evident how this psychic mechanism, which hasn’t the same meaning in all Freudian texts, undergoes each time substantial changes in his specific sense. Starting from this matter, it is possible to propose critic reflections allowing to put Verleugnung in a debate directed to establish a new function it would get on the plan of metapsychological effects.
