In the international literature on urinary retention a growing interest about its psychological aspects is emerging, particularly as for the psychopathological dimensions of this disease. As the theoretical models shift from a focus on the
intrapsychic conflict to the study of the developmental clinical aspects in traumatic contexts, the role of dissociative and alexithymic events in patients with functional somatic diseases is more and more explored. This study aims to investigate the presence of dissociative and alexithymic aspects as a probable clue of adjustment to post-traumatic life events in twenty female patients with urinary retention. Results show elevated scores about these measures and support hypothesis of an implication of dissociative processes in this specific pathology and the clinical and scientific necessity to study post-traumatic aspects in urinary retention.
